A reel is a video made to be found by people who do not follow you and it stays on your profile; a story is made for the people who already follow you and disappears after 24 hours. Reels can run up to 20 minutes, while a story video is cut into 60-second clips.
Use a reel when you want new viewers. Use a story when you want to talk to people who already know you.
Instagram reel vs story at a glance
The table compares the two formats on the points that decide which to post. Every row comes from Instagram's own help pages, linked below the table.
| Reel | Story | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Up to 20 minutes; over 3 minutes is not recommended to new audiences | Video up to 60 seconds shows as one clip; longer video is split into clips |
| How long it lasts | Stays on your profile until you delete or archive it | Gone from Feed, your profile and Direct after 24 hours, unless saved as a highlight |
| Where it appears | Feed, the Reels viewer, Explore, audio, effect and hashtag pages (public accounts) | A ring around your profile picture, the top of Feed and your Direct inbox |
| Reach beyond followers | Anyone can see a public account's reel | Public stories may also appear in Search and Explore |
| On your profile grid | In the Reels tab; adding it to the grid is optional | Never on the grid |
| How people respond | Comments, likes, remixes, reposts, downloads | Replies sent as messages, plus stickers |

How long is a reel, and how long is a story?
A reel can be up to 20 minutes, made of one clip or several. Instagram adds that reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences, so a longer reel mostly reaches people who already follow you. This is from Instagram's reel recording page.
A story video up to 60 seconds appears as one clip. Longer videos are split into several clips.
Which reaches more people, a reel or a story?
A reel usually has the larger ceiling, because reels from public accounts can appear in Feed, the Reels viewer, Explore and on audio, effect and hashtag pages, per Instagram. A story goes first to your followers' story row.
Stories from public accounts may also show in Search and Explore, so a story is not invisible to strangers. Private accounts limit both formats to approved followers.
Instagram's ranking explainer shows how differently the two are ranked. Stories are ordered by your viewing history, engagement history and closeness to the poster. For reels, the most important predictions are whether someone will reshare a reel, watch it all the way through, like it and go to its audio page, and Instagram makes low-resolution, watermarked, muted, bordered, mostly-text or already-posted reels less visible.

How long does each one last?
A story lasts 24 hours, then leaves your profile, Feed and Direct inbox. Instagram saves it to your Stories Archive unless you turn that off, and a highlight keeps it on your profile. You can see who viewed a story for 48 hours.
A reel has no expiry. It stays until you delete it or move it to your archive, using Manage on the reel.
When to post a reel and when to post a story
Post a reel when the idea makes sense to a stranger with no context, such as a how-to or a before and after. Post a story when it only matters to people who already follow you, such as a poll or a reminder that a sale ends tonight.
| You want to | Post |
|---|---|
| Be found by people who don't follow you | Reel |
| Keep a video on your profile for months | Reel |
| Ask followers a quick question | Story (question or poll sticker) |
| Remind followers about a deadline | Story |
| Show a rough, unpolished moment | Story |
| Send people to a new reel or post | Story that shares it |
To point followers at a new reel, share it to your story. For the reel side, see our reels strategy and the reel size guide; the reels safe zone checker shows where on-screen text will be covered.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a reel show on my profile grid?
A reel appears in the Reels section of your profile. To also show it on your main grid, open the reel, tap Options, then Manage, then Add to profile grid. Instagram describes these steps on its Manage reels page. Stories never appear on the grid.
How long can I see who viewed my story?
You can see who viewed a story for up to 48 hours after you post it. Open the story and swipe up. After 24 hours, find it in your archive from Menu, then Archive, and swipe up there. The view count includes replays, so it can be higher than the number of usernames.
Can I stop some people replying to my story?
Yes. By default anyone who can see your story can reply with a message. Go to your profile, tap Menu, then Messages and story replies, then Story replies, and choose who can reply. You can also hide the story from specific people.
Can someone download my reel?
On a public account, yes, unless you turn reel downloads off in your account settings or on the individual reel. People can also remix your reel and record with your original audio. On a private account, only approved followers can see and share your reels, and nobody can remix them.
