Pick one and watch it get built
To save a reel inside Instagram, tap Options, then Save, and it goes to your private Saved list. To get a video file, use Download on your own reel, or save a draft to your camera roll before you post. Downloading someone else's reel only works if that creator allows it.
| You want to | Method | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Bookmark a reel to rewatch | Save, then add to a collection | Any reel you can see |
| Keep a file of a reel you posted | Sharing options, then Download | Your own published reels |
| Keep a file before posting | Save to camera roll from the editor | Your own drafts |
| Keep someone else's reel as a file | Download, if the creator allows it | Public accounts that have downloads on |
How to save a reel to Instagram
To save a reel, tap Options, then Save. It lands in your saved posts, a private section of your profile that only you can see. Instagram Help describes this for iPhone and Android.
- Open the reel.
- Tap Options, then tap Save.
- Go to your profile and tap Menu, then tap Saved.
- Tap New collection in the top right and name it.
- Tap the saved posts you want in it, then tap Save.
Those collection steps are in Instagram's guide to creating a collection. To skip the steps, tap and hold Save below a post and pick a collection straight away.
How to download your own reel
To download a reel you posted, open it, tap Sharing options in the bottom right, then tap Download. Instagram Help on managing reels lists the same menu, which also has Share and Copy link.
Downloaded reels carry an Instagram watermark, your username and audio attribution, per Instagram's reels download page, so keep your original video if you want a clean version. If you plan to post the file somewhere else, run it through the reels safe zone checker first so captions and logos are not covered by another app's interface.
How to save a reel draft to your camera roll
To save a draft to your camera roll, tap Next while recording, swipe up to edit, swipe left to right, then tap Save at the bottom. To keep it only inside Instagram, tap Next twice and choose Save draft. Both paths come from Instagram Help.
Drafts stay in the app until you share or delete them, and Instagram sets no limit on how many you keep. To find one, go to your profile, tap Reels, then tap Drafts.

Can you download someone else's reel?
Sometimes. Whether a reel can be downloaded follows the creator's account. On a public account anyone can download it unless the creator switched downloads off. On a private account, no one can. Instagram's page on who can download reels states this.
Instagram also says downloaded reels may not be used for commercial purposes, and that it cannot control what people do with them afterwards. Reposting someone's work as your own, or in an ad, is a copyright problem whatever the setting says. Ask the creator first. If you want customer or fan footage in your own content, see user-generated content on Instagram.
How to stop people downloading your reels
To turn downloads off for a reel you are about to post, tap Next, tap More options, then switch off "Allow people to download your reels". You choose whether that applies to all reels or only this one. You can also change it in your account privacy settings, or for a single reel you already shared, per Instagram Help.
Switching it off does not affect copies already on someone's device. For what makes a reel worth saving, see the Instagram Reels strategy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will someone know if I save their reel?
No. When you save someone's post or reel, they are not able to tell that you saved it, and only you can see your saved posts. Saving is private to you, so the creator gets no notification. Source: Instagram Help.
Why is there no Download button on a reel?
The creator has probably turned downloads off, or their account is private. For Instagram users under 18 with public accounts, downloads are off by default, though they can turn them on at any time. On public accounts, only reels shared after downloads became available can be downloaded, per Instagram Help.
Can I open my reel drafts on another phone?
No. Drafts are saved onto the device you recorded on, and logging in on another phone does not bring them over. If you uninstall Instagram, the drafts are lost. Saving the reel to your camera roll first gives you a copy outside the app (Instagram Help).
Does a downloaded reel keep the music?
Not always. Music you added from Instagram's music library is not saved when you download a reel or save it to your camera roll. Original audio can be included when the reel is downloadable. The file carries an Instagram watermark, your username and audio attribution, per Instagram Help.
