Pick one and watch it get built
To automate social media posts, schedule them ahead, set recurring slots for evergreen content, and add rules for routine replies. Each of these is a separate automation with its own tool and its own risk. Automation handles the clicking; you still decide what to say and when it should not run.
How to automate social media posts, step by step
Start with scheduling, then add one automation at a time and watch how it behaves before adding the next. Each step below has its own section that covers what it does, the tool path, its limits and the main risk to plan for.
- Schedule posts once. Write them ahead and let the tool publish at the set time.
- Set recurring slots for evergreen posts. Repeat only content that stays true.
- Send content feeds into drafts. Connect an RSS feed and approve each draft.
- Let AI draft captions. Give it a short brief and edit every result.
- Add keyword replies. Write the answers yourself for the questions you get most.
- Review before publishing. Read the queue each week and pause anything that no longer fits.
Scheduling posts ahead
Scheduling is the base automation: you approve a post once and the platform or tool publishes it later. Native tools work per network and have their own windows. A scheduler adds one composer and calendar, within what each platform's API allows.
Native limits differ. Facebook Page posts can be scheduled 20 minutes to 29 days ahead. LinkedIn allows 10 minutes to 3 months for personal posts, and Pinterest allows Pins up to 30 days ahead for business accounts. The risk is a stale post: one scheduled weeks ago can land at the wrong moment, so pause the queue when news breaks. The full comparison and a weekly routine are in the scheduling guide.
Recurring and evergreen posts
Recurring posts repeat the same content on a set cycle. They suit content that stays true over time, such as a product explainer, a pinned tip or a weekly reminder, and they save you from rewriting the same post whenever a gap appears in the calendar.
Native options are narrow. In a Facebook group, only admins can set up recurring posts, which repeat daily, weekly or monthly through Admin Assist. Elsewhere you need a scheduler's recurrence or evergreen queue. The risk is repetition: followers who see the same text again and again read it as spam, so vary the wording and rotate through a pool of posts.
RSS and content feeds into drafts
An RSS automation watches a blog or news feed and turns each new item into a draft post. Platform schedulers take one post at a time, so feed-based posting has to come from a scheduler or a separate automation tool rather than from the network itself.
Send feed items to drafts, not straight to published. A feed can deliver a headline you would not share, a duplicate or a broken link, and nothing checks tone for you. Approve each draft, add your own line and then schedule it.

AI-drafted captions and ChatGPT
AI can draft captions, variations and ideas, but a person should approve every post. Use it to remove the blank page, not to replace your voice. Give it a short brief with the audience, the tone and one thing to say, then edit for facts and style.
The free Instagram caption generator and content calendar generator give you starting drafts. ChatGPT on its own cannot publish to your accounts. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems, and assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT support it. Where a scheduler offers an MCP connection, the assistant can create and schedule posts in it, so have it draft or schedule and review the queue before posts go live. The risk is wrong facts and repeated phrasing across posts.
Keyword replies to comments and DMs
Keyword rules answer repeated questions automatically: someone comments a trigger word, and a prepared public reply or direct message goes out. Write the answers yourself, keep each rule narrow, and always give people a clear way to reach a real person.
SociaHive covers several of these automations in one place: scheduling, recurring posts, RSS drafts and Instagram keyword replies. See the no-code automation guide for other tool options. Check each platform's automation policy first, because platforms restrict automated activity and the rules differ.
The failure to avoid is a reply that fires on the wrong meaning. Zoho Social describes an airline whose automated replies were triggered by the words "Thank you", which a frustrated customer had used sarcastically. The automated response missed the tone. Keep keyword rules narrow, and route complaints to a person.
What is safe to automate
Automate repeatable work that you have already approved, and keep anything that needs judgement or reacts to events manual. The table sorts the common tasks by how safe they are to hand over to a tool, and why each one lands where it does.
| Task | Safe to automate? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Publishing at set times | Yes | Time-shifts work you already approved |
| Recurring evergreen posts | Yes, with limits | Repeating too often looks like spam |
| Feed items into drafts | Yes, as drafts only | Needs a human check before publishing |
| Replying to common questions | Yes, with narrow rules | Keyword rules can misread tone |
| Replying to complaints or news | No | Needs a person and the right tone |
| Following, liking or mass messaging | No | Likely to break platform rules |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I automate social media posts for free?
Yes, to a point. Native schedulers in Meta Business Suite, LinkedIn and YouTube Studio cost nothing, and several third-party schedulers have free plans. The difference is usually the post cap and which post types a tool can schedule, so compare those before you commit your calendar to one.
What is the difference between scheduling and automation?
Scheduling publishes a post you wrote at a time you chose. Automation also decides something for you, such as repeating a post, drafting from a feed or replying to a keyword. Scheduling is low risk because you approved the exact content. Automation needs clear rules and regular spot checks, since it acts without asking you each time.
Do I need to code to automate social media?
No. Schedulers, RSS-to-draft features and keyword reply rules are set up with forms and toggles, not code. Code or API work only matters if you want a custom workflow between tools. A developer API helps when you want posts created from your own app or a spreadsheet. Our no-code automation guide compares the options.
What should I do if an automated post goes out at a bad time?
Pause the queue first, then delete or edit the post on the platform. Check what else is scheduled for the next few days and hold anything related to the news or event. Afterwards, add a rule to your review: scan the queue whenever something major happens, not only once a week.
