Most Discord mods don't get paid. A server moderator is a member whose role carries moderation permissions, and nothing in Discord's help pages describes a payment to server mods. Paid moderation exists, but it is a job with an employer, not a feature of the platform.
Below: who pays when someone does, how server owners can earn money, and what is left of the Discord Moderator Academy.
Who pays Discord moderators
Usually nobody. Discord's help pages describe moderation as permissions the server owner grants to members. Most servers pick mods by trust, not by hiring.
If a server owner chooses to pay a mod, that is a private arrangement between the two of them, and Discord is not part of it.
When Discord moderators do get paid
Pay shows up when moderation is part of a job. A company, studio or creator that runs a large Discord can hire a community manager or moderator and pay them like any other contractor or employee. The money comes from the employer, and the rate, hours and contract are theirs to set, so there is no standard figure to quote. Check job boards for "community moderator" and "community manager" roles, and treat any average pay figure a job board shows as that board's data, not a Discord rate.
Can a server owner earn money from Discord
Some can, and that is where moderator pay can come from. Discord's Monetization Policy covers Server Subscriptions, App Subscriptions and Server Shop. To monetize, you must be 18 or older and your account must be in good standing, which includes no safety violation in the past 30 days.
Whether an owner pays moderators from that income is their call. The policy also lists content that cannot be monetized, including sexually explicit content, gambling-related content and promotion of third-party servers. If you want the server listed in Discord's Discover tab, see Discord Server Discovery requirements.

What happened to the Discord Moderator Academy
The Discord Moderator Academy and its exam no longer appear to be running. An archived community post on Discord's support site, written by a member rather than by Discord, says the Discord Moderator Discord and the under-18 Moderator Mentorship Community closed, and that the Certified Moderator Badge became the Moderator Alumni Badge for former participants.
Treat the closure as a community report, not an official Discord notice. Either way, the programs were learning resources and community servers, not paid positions.
How to get paid for community moderation
You get paid for community work by applying for community jobs, not for Discord modding as such. Look for community manager, community moderator or support roles at companies that run their own Discord. Describe your experience in plain terms: how big the server was, what rules you enforced, and how you handled raids and reports.
To become a mod in the first place, ask the owner of a server where you are already active. Owners pick people who are around, calm and reliable.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do Discord mods make?
Most make nothing, because server moderators are not Discord employees and Discord publishes no pay scale for them. Those who are paid get whatever their employer or server owner agreed. A figure labelled "Discord moderator" on a job board is an average for listed roles at specific employers, not a Discord rate.
What does it take to be a Discord mod?
An owner gives you a role with moderation permissions, so it takes their trust. Owners usually pick active, calm members who know the server's rules. No Discord certificate is needed to moderate a server; permissions are the owner's to give.
Can a teenager be a Discord mod?
Yes, in a server whose owner allows it. Discord's own pages set limits around it: monetization requires being 18 or older, and teens aged 13 to 17 cannot join age-restricted servers, per Discord's help page. The under-18 Moderator Mentorship Community was closed, per the community post. Teen filter defaults are covered in Discord explicit content filter.
Is it worth being an unpaid mod?
It is worth it if you care about the community, since the work is real: handling reports, timeouts and bans. It can also be useful experience for community jobs. Agree your hours with the owner up front, so unpaid work does not turn into an unwritten second job.
